#1 Opening thread post.
Alright, I'm going to throw an idea out there to hear what people think about it.  Since gr00pz is going to be user-moderated, I think it's about time that we change the current respect system to something a bit more non-exploitable.
Here are the changes that I think should be put into place.  The numbers can be modified but this is just to give you a general idea.

1. Only people with 5 respect can take respect from another member.  I think this is very important because I think it's just an accident waiting to happen with new accounts able to take respect.

2. This one goes hand-in-hand with #1.  You can only give 1 respect to a person per day, IP-specific.  You can only give respect if you have 1 respect yourself.  Not only does this give value to respect, but it also prevents people from exploiting #1.

And this one is not really related to the ones mentioned above...

3. IP-locking chat votes.  If IP A puts a vote against a member, then another member sharing IP A can not place a vote against that member either.  Also, IP A can not vote on a member also using IP A.

Tell me what you think.  I would like some feedback! Smile

#2 ReRespect and some other various modifications.
1 and 3 are good ideas but unless i'm missing something then i'm not sure if #2 would work. Do accounts start with +1 respect? I can't remember. If not, then there will be nobody that is able to give any respect out on a new site, leaving everyone at 0 for all eternity........

#3 Re Respect and some other various modifications.
i agree with rocksaw....

1 and 3 are good ideas....especially the chat ip check. Whilst i often tell mika that ip checking is no good on the registration process because of repeats, i think this will be a far less occuring issue in chat votes...so thumbs up to that idea.

as mika already knows, im on with blacklisting the use of a whole list of 'disposable' email addresses....so the sites should be far more secure anyway.

once ive implemented the 2 suggested changes thats it....thats as far as im willing to go with protecting the network from spammers. i could spend my whole life making this system more and more secure....but itll just reach the point where users are simply unable to do anything, thus negating the whole respect/auto moderating feature.

Once implemented we have the following security measures in place for those who dont know:

ANTI SPAM/DUPE ACCOUNTS:
  • Email validation on registration (Plus denial of disposable email clients).
  • Captcha input to reduce bot sign ups etc
  • Anti proxy detection, so you are unable to signup via proxy systems on the net.
  • JS enabled buttons which make bot submissions harder

AUTO MODERATION:
  • Respect system on users, which auto BANS a user from the current site when they reach -5. Because respect is global, this also means they would only need 1 vote on any other site to be auto-banned from 2nd 3rd sites etc etc.
  • Post voting enables the deletion of posts by community vote. If a single post receives -5 votes, it is instantly removed from the system
  • Thread voting enable the deletion of full threads removing spam. Voting is compulsory on reply to threads which you have not created or yet voted on.
  • The main sites (ie DS-Play.com) take news storys from subsites (ie ds-play.com/whatever/).Once a sub story reaches +8 votes it moves to the parent domain, meaning pre moderated content only.
  • Chat allows kicking of users via voting system. (This is what we will IP protect). Any user that reaches -5 votes is auto kicked, and loses 1 respect. Obviously if they are kicked several times they will receive a site ban via the system mentioned in point #1
  • Chat allows kicking instantly via site admins
  • Forums allow deleting/locking/removal of individual posts of content by site Admins/Moderators
  • Articles allow erasing of storys by site Editors/Admins

Think thats everything!

Ta.
Carl.

Just keep this in mind; DSP managed fine with no respect system at all, and was a lot more succesful than NP is (although that's probably due to the success of the DS)

Also, what about posts that need to be edited, e.g email addresses posted etc.?

Based on member sign ups in the first year, NP is actually more popular than DS-Play was. Also bear in mind that NP has NEVER had the kind of exposure that DSP got from massive sites such as Joystiq, Digg, and DSFanBoy....

I actually think NP is really in a pretty good position at present...Sure it needs a s*** load of work doing to it...but its doing okay at the moment and will be in good shape once i get back around to fixing its nagging bugs.

If you remember back DSP never managed without a respect system....1 of the major reasons it was pulled was due to the uncontrollable spam on the site...That spam has never been present to the same level on NP, its just the Respect system isnt secure enough. Lessons get learnt as you go along...And i really think that all the major hic-ups of NP are all but nailed with gr00pz.

blocking of disposable emails is now in place.
30 minute sinbin in place for kicked users.

Nice one, all this (Apart from the last one) should be implemented on NP.

Also, an idea would be to disable respect when in sin bin.
